Hall of Fame Inductee - 1951-52 Boys Basketball Team
The 1950-51 and 1951-52 Quincy High Blue Devil Basketball teams were
two of the best ever in the school's history. Under Head Coach George
Latham, the Devils posted a 29-4 record and collected a third place
trophy in the 1951 state basketball tournament. Quincy advanced to the
Illinois "Sweet 16" and defeated Hinsdale Central 58-46 to advance to
the quarterfinals. After nipping Lincoln 65-63, Quincy dropped a 64-63
decision to Moline in the semi-finals. They made it exciting, defeating
Decatur 60-58 to capture third place. In 1952 Laytham's Devils racked up
20 wins against 4 losses entering post season. They destroyed their
first 5 tournament opponents by an average of 43 points per game, before
meeting up with Freeport in the first round of the state tournament.
Quincy disposed of Freeport 74-68, got by a fine Taylorville squad 68-64
in the quarterfinals and nipped Mt. Vernon 54-51 in the semi-finals.
The small town of Hebron was all that stood between this talented Quincy
team and the school's second state title. But fate and Hebron's Judson
twins were on the side of the tiny town near the Wisconsin state line.
Hebron defeated Quincy 64-59 in a game that is still talked about today.
