Hall of Fame Inductee - 1957 Men's Golf Team
The 1957 boys golf team placed second in the state tournament, finishing just two strokes behind champion Rockford East.
The Blue Devils trailed by 24 strokes after the first day competition,
but the team shaved 20 shots off its first round score to post the best
second-round score and make a run for the title on the University of
Illinois Orange Course in Savoy. Quincy and Joliet Catholic tied for
second place, but the Blue Devils won a nine-hole playoff to earn the
trophy.
The team was unbeaten in 14 matches and finished first in the Peoria
Invitational, first in the Quincy Invitational and first in the district
tournament.
Sophomore Dick Sturhahn was the medalist at the district tournament and
lost a three-way playoff with Highland Park's Joel Hirsch and Peoria
Woodruff's Larry Waldon for third place, finishing in fifth. He played
31 holes of golf on the final day of play - 18 in team competition, nine
in the team playoff and four in the individual playoff.
Senior Frank Siepker was the medalist at the Quincy Invitational and
placed in a tie for ninth place at the state tournament. Other team
members included Fred Nothold, Ed Ehrhart, Jerry Kelley, Joe Scott, John
Meyer and Dave Oakley. The team was coached by Don Sloan.
