Hall of Fame Inductee - 1962 Boys Basketball Tea

Record setting is the best way to describe this run-and-gun group of Blue Devils from the early 1960s. Second year Head Coach Sherrill Hanks' group established a total of 2 new and 7 season records on their way to a 28-4 mark while capturing third place in the Illinois State Tournament. Lead by Senior All-Stater, Rick Rineberg, Quincy opened at 3-2 before running off 17 straight wins. After a 10-point loss to Collinsville to end the regular season, the Devils rolled past Barry, Camp Point Central and Christian Brothers to capture the Quincy Regional. They topped Carthage 50-40 at Macomb and then squeezed past Galesburg 68-65 to capture the Macomb Sectional title. Quincy defeated Springfield by 19 in the Super sectional and cut Washington by a final of 45-37 in the quarter-final round before losing to Decatur in the state semi-finals. In the battle for third place McLeansboro was no match for Quincy with the Devils winning by a final of 84-45. Balance was the key for this group: with 6 players scoring over 200 points each. Members of the 1961-62 QHS Boys Varsity Basketball Team include: Head Coach Sherrill Hanks, Assistant Coaches Dale Hendren, John Engelmeyer, and Jack Hammock. The players: Rick Rineberg, Steve Spann, Kenny Wilson, Wayne Campbell, Dennis K. Cashman, Freddy Grimmitt, Larry Gross, Steve Hunter, Knap, E. Mont Robertson, Kenneth Stice, Robert Anderson Wilson and Mike Luetkemeyer.
