Hall of Fame Inductee - 1964-65 Boys Basketball Team
The 1965 version of Quincy's basketball team were known around the
state as the "Cinderella Blue Devils". And for good reason. This group
of undersized over achievers came back from the dead time and time again
to advance to the Illinois State Finals and eventually capture second
place in the state. Led by 5'7" senior pivot man, Gary Thompson, Quincy
recorded 26 wins and set four new team records, including most points,
most field goals and most made free throws in a single season. The
Devils started their post season adventure by capturing the Christian
Brothers Regional with wins over Liberty, Christian Brothers and Central
High. At the Macomb Sectional, Quincy beat Galesburg by four and
defeated Canton 41-38 to capture the title. The Devils won the Macomb
Super Sectional by avenging an earlier season loss to Jacksonville,
winning 56-52. At Huff Gymnasium, Quincy defeated Decatur 71-62 in the
Quarter finals and came from behind to beat Harvey Thornton 64-59 in the
Semi-Final round. In the title game, Quincy matched up with Vergil
Fletcher and the Collinsville Kahoks, a team that had beaten them
earlier in the year by just one point on this very floor. The Devils
trailed throughout the contest but still made their now famous fourth
quarter run, falling short and losing to the powerful Collinsville
Kahoks, 55-52.
