Hall of Fame Inductee - 1981 Boys Basketball Team
Arguably the greatest team in Quincy High School history. With two
future Big Ten Conference players - 6 foot 10 center Michael Payne and
6-3 guard Bruce Douglas - the Blue Devils won all 33 games to claim the
second state championship for Quincy. So dominating was this team that
only three games, a 76-75 overtime victory over Chicago Phillips in the
championship game of the QHS Thanksgiving Tournament, a 47-42 win over
New Lenox Providence in the Pontiac Christmas Tournament title game and a
64-58 triumph over Lincoln in the sectional final - were decided by
fewer than nine points. Quincy crushed Kankakee Westview in the super
sectional (77-44), Antioch in the quarterfinals (75-50), Wheaton Central
in the semifinals (65-34) and Proviso East in the championship game
(68-39). The Blue Devils won their fifth straight Western Big Six title
and were voted the mythical national champion by Dave Krider of USA
Today. Payne, a senior who went on to star at Iowa, averaged 16.7 points
and 9.5 rebounds. Douglas, a future Big Ten Conference MVP at Illinois,
averaged a team high 19.3 points and 7.4 assists as a junior. Both were
named to every All-State team and to several All-America teams.
