Hall of Fame Inductee - 1982 Boys Basketball Team
How does a team top a 33-0 mark, a state title and a national title
the following year? They go undefeated in the regular season (25-0),
set a State Record for consecutive wins (64) and make it to the State's
final four for the third time in four years. That group was the 1982
Quincy High Blue Devils. Lead by Parade All-American Bruce Douglas, the
82' Devils were in a class by themselves-literally!!! After a 65-63
scare at Chicago Weber in the second game of the season, Quincy captured
the QHS Thanksgiving Tournament, outscoring their opponents by 89
points in three games. The Devils won the next five games before
heading to the Pontiac Tournament as the defending champions. There they
captured their fourth straight Pontiac title, winning by an average of
31 points per game. Only Danville gave the Devils much of a contest in
the remaining 11 games of the regular season---losing to Quincy by a
58-55 final. Quincy tied the state record of 58 for consecutive wins
with a fourteen-point win over East St. Louis on the final regular
season game of the year. Quincy opened post season in the Jacksonville
Regional against Chatham Glenwood and set a new state record---barely
winning by a 36-32 final. The Devils won the Jacksonville Regional,
Springfield Sectional and Normal Super sectional with ease on their way
back to Champaign. At Assembly Hall Quincy rolled to a 20-point win
over Lisle Benet Academy in the Quarterfinals. But the win streak ended
there. Upstart Chicago Mendel Catholic, who had defeated Peoria Manual
the night before, ended Quincy's win streak, and hopes of a second
consecutive State Title, by defeating the Devils 53-52-despite some last
second heroics by Bruce and Dennis Douglas. The Devils, exhausted from
the afternoon session, captured third place with a 62-61 win over
Chicago Marshall. And again it was Bruce and Dennis in the spotlight.
With no time on the clock, and Quincy down by 1, Dennis Douglas threw an
in-bounds pass over the head of Bruce Douglas. Bruce dove over the
base line and, while horizontal to the floor, tipped the ball back into
the hands of Tim Huseman, who, in turn, hit the game winning lay-up.
