Hall of Fame Inductee - Cynthia Bumbry
Excellence at every level is the hallmark of a true hall of famer. It's a
hallmark displayed by Cynthia Bumbry. A talented 2-sport athlete
Cynthia Bumbry excelled in both basketball and softball, leading the
Lady Devils softball team to the state title in 1978. Her athletic and
academic prowess was good enough to earn Bumbry a scholarship to
Illinois State University. While at I.S.U. she excelled at both
softball and basketball. She earned a spot on the Academic Dean's list
and later graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. Bumbry then
brought her talent home and served a number of roles with the Quincy
Public School System, including Physical Education teacher, Head Junior
High Basketball Coach and Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach. Some
people were born to coach and Bumbry is one of those people. After
accepting a head basketball coaching position at Evanston Township High,
Bumbry took the program to new heights. She coached her team into the
Elite 8 and for her efforts was named as the Coach of the Year by the
Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. During her stay in Evanston
Bumbry has been recognized numerous times-winning the Suburban Teacher
Award in 1993-94---selected as a Junior Olympic Floor Basketball Coach
in 1994 and serving as Interim Department Chair for the Physical
Education and Health Department. Bumbry earned her Type 75 Masters
Degree in Administration in 1998 and most recently accepted the position
as Dean of Students.
