Hall of Fame Inductee - Dan Burgess
1995 QHS graduate, Boys Track
Kerry Anders’ advice was worth its weight in gold. With
the pole vault bar raised to 14 feet, 9 inches at the 1995
Class AA state track championships, the Quincy High
School coach suggested Dan Burgess either take a step
back on his approach or change poles.
Burgess heeded Anders’ advice, switching to a pole that
was the same size but stiffer. It proved to be a championship
ploy as Burgess cleared 15 feet, 3 inches — it was
the first time in his high school career he topped 15 feet —
to become one of six QHS boys athletes to win a state
track championship.
Following high school, Burgess joined the United States
Marine Corps and is currently serving overseas.
