Hall of Fame Inductee - Dick Thompson
Thompson, a 1953 graduate, was a standout in football, basketball and
baseball at QHS. He started as a junior guard on the 1951-52 basketball
team that lost to Hebron in the state championship game. He earned
all-state honors in basketball and was a star infielder in baseball.
Thompson received a basketball scholarship to the University of Illinois
but transferred to Quincy College after his freshman season. He was a
three-year starter at Quincy College and was a starter on the 1954-55
basketball team that was the first Hawk's team to reach the NAIA
national tournament.
Upon graduation, Thompson became one of the top fast pitch softball
pitchers in the nation. He also officiated basketball and football games
and became one of the first men to play in and to officiate a state
championship basketball game. His daughter Lynn, is also a member of the
QHS Hall of Fame, making them the first father-daughter combination to
be so honored.
Thompson went on to become a teacher and an administrator in the Quincy
Public School system for more than two decades.
