Hall of Fame Inductee - Don Sloan
A charter member of the Quincy High School Sports Hall of Fame, Sloan
was an athletic institution at the school for nearly 40 years. The
Galesburg area native joined the Quincy High School faculty in the late
1930s and served as the official timer for football, basketball,
wrestling and soccer. He was an assistant football coach from 1939-47,
head wrestling coach from 1947-55 and head golf coach from 1951-74. The
school's annual golf invitational bears his name. The Blue Devils' 1957
golf team finished second in the state tournament, and others were
consistently among the best in Illinois. Sloan served as chairman of the
first Illinois Coaches Golf Committee and was voted the first golf
coach of the year by the Illinois High School Association in 1972. He
served as the official timer for the Illinois state basketball
tournament in 1974 and 1975.
