Hall of Fame Inductee - George Berggren
One of the finest men to walk the halls of Quincy Senior High School was
George Berggren. A veteran of World War II, Berggren found his niche in
life working with young people in the classroom and helping them better
learn the games of football, baseball and basketball. He graduated from
Illinois Wesleyan in 1950 and began teaching immediately. Ten years
later he earned his Master Degree from the University of Illinois.
Berggren moved his family to Quincy in 1959 and assumed the duties of
"official scorer" at Blue Devil home games; a position he held for over
thirty-one years. Watching and listening to Berggren keep the book was
something everyone should have experienced. His was a verbal
play-by-play style that both entertained and informed those around him.
He did it all with a smile and a twinkle in his eye. And George had a
kind word for home and visitor alike. For his work at the official
scorer's table Berggren was inducted into the Illinois Basketball
Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1991. He passed away just three
months later. Few possess the gift of making those around him feel
better about themselves. George Berggren had that gift. His wife Lois
and his four daughters share in this award.
