Hall of Fame Inductee - Harold W. Knapheide III
Knapheide, a 1963 graduate, was a two-year letterman on the basketball
team and also ran the low hurdles and on several relay teams for the
track team.
As a junior, he scored 230 points for the Blue Devils, who finished with
a 28-4 record and took third place in the 1962 state tournament. As a
senior, Knapheide scored 460 points for the Blue Devils, who finished
with a 25-5 record. He won the rebounding award and was named the most
improved player on the team. He was also named to the Chicago American
all-state team.
As president of the Knapheide Manufacturing Company, Knapheide was a
leader in providing and securing financial help during a time when it
was necessary to reduce funding for sports programs at QHS. When several
non-tenured teachers were cut from the faculty in 1978, Knapheide
provided a position in his company's manufacturing business for boys
basketball coach Jerry Leggett. That allowed Leggett to remain as the
QHS coach, and the 1978-79 Blue Devils eventually placed second in the
Class AA tournament.
He has always remained closely involved with athletics through the
years, providing summer employment and sponsoring athletes in summer
camps.
