Hall of Fame Inductee - John Ernst
The owner of one of the smoothest jump shots in school history, John
Ernst earned three varsity letters for basketball in the mid 1970's.
After scoring 151 points as a sophomore and 324 more his junior year,
Ernst joined the 400 point club the following year by averaging 17.4
points per game, good for 417 points. He was chosen as the team's Most
Valuable Player and later represented Quincy in the I.B.C.A. All-Star
game. In addition, Ernst was named to the All Western Big Six team and
was chosen as honorable mention All-State. Culver Stockton College
recognized Ernst's talents and gave him a full athletic scholarship.
Ernst made an immediate impact, excelling in golf and basketball in his
freshman year. He went on to collect varsity letters in both sports all
four years at Culver Stockton. A prolific scorer with long range talent,
Ernst still holds numerous individual Wildcat basketball records. He
graduated as Culver's all-time leading scorer with 2022 points. John
Ernst has enjoyed great success on the golf course in this area. As of
1995 Ernst held the course record at nearby Spring Lake Country Club. In
the summer of 1995, Ernst scored the city's triple crown winning the
Quincy Country Club Championship the Men's City Golf Championship and
was the A player on Quincy's Oldsmobile Scramble team that eventually
placed 21st in the National Tournament.
