Hall of Fame Inductee - Selmer Storby
The first in a long line of outstanding basketball coaches at Quincy
High School, Storby guided the Blue Devils to a 115-32 record in seven
seasons, but he's most known for putting the Blue Devils on the Illinois
basketball map. Storby coached Quincy to its first state tournament
appearance - and championship by beating Harvey High School of Thornton,
39-27 - in 1934. The Blue Devils had lost by one point to eventual
state champion Springfield High in 1933 and advanced to state
quarterfinals in 1935, where they lost by one point. When Perry Barclift
was asked to what he attributed his success as a player after the 1934
championship game, he replied, To the best basketball coach in the
world. Storby was voted to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association
Hall of Fame and was a charter member of the Quincy HIgh School Sports
Hall of Fame.
